The music through the Xperience is full of comfort, for example, the acoustic guitar is more round and warm and less steel and thin, and the vocals were sonorous and chesty. I found the AQ Donna Prima speakers to be an exceptionally good match for the turntable as they highlighted the strengths of the Pro-Ject.

A quiet running AC motor with a two-step pulley drives the platter's outside edge via a belt. The transparent acrylic plinth stands on three height-adjustable Sorbothane-damped aluminium cones. The resonance-optimised platter is a sandwich construction utilising the hub, a fine-balanced medium density fibre platter weighing 2Kg, a 4mm thick flat-ground layer of vinyl and a screw-down metal record clamp. The platter's chrome-plated stainless-steel axle runs on a Teflon bearing plate in a sintered bronze bearing housing. External power supply avoids potential electro-mechanical interference.

The Xperience Acryl requires manual speed change. From factory it can be optionally fitted with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge.

During the auditioning I found myself listening to the Xperience at somewhat high listening volumes. Why so? Just because it was so enjoyable. As soon as the obligatory Floyd's helicopter had passed I quickly became a big fan of the thick and punchy bottom end that the Xperience conjured up with the bass and drum kit. Both the instruments established solid rhythmical backbone of the track, especially the bass was nicely contoured, rich in tone and physiologic enough to resonate in my body, not just in my ears. The kick drum had substantial lows yet I would like to hear it a bit finer defined with more clarity on its attack. These reservations are considered from the absolute point of view - if I consider the pricing level of the set-up I should shut up.

The Eric Bibb's blues numbers are the typical example of the Opus 3 's recording philosophy - no post-mix or overdubs, the tracks are taken live to the tape, what was in the studio is on the record. No wonder that I enjoyed so much these songs through the Pro-Ject Xperience Acryl. Once again, the impressive bass fundament acknowledged its presence yet it did not create any disbalance with the rest of the frequency range. The feeling of rather velvety soft top end that I had withThe Wall was gone - in Bibb's Lonesome Valley the highs were crisp, sound and sparkling, yet they were very natural. I could listen for hours to the sound like this but it is not possible - one has to stand up after 15 minutes and flip the record, it is vinyl, you know.

I found the clamp that bolts on to the central pin of the turntable a bit impractical. Yes, I could tighten it at will so it really worked well, yet I was nervous all the time that I might scratch the record by touching the pin's sharp threads. I assume that a user will adapt the habit of not scratching anything soon but during the review time I did not have the opportunity to develop such a skill.

The first movement of the Mahler's Titan Symphony was delight through the Pro-Ject Xperience Acryl. The soundstage was spacious with fluid front-to-back layering and excellent imaging, the instruments kept necessary levels of autonomy yet the orchestra was communicating as a whole. In the sub-2,000€ category there are some good CD players but none I know is capable of building the drama and scale better than the Pro-Ject. Considering the relatively small investment the Xperience provides fantastic value.
