Speaker cables

This March Pavel Rehberger aka Noble Audio has asked me to give a listen to a new speaker cable protype. I had a gap in my calendar so I agreed. The cable promptly arrived but I received no information on price or its design features. Well, this was not bad as I could audition it without any prejudices and expectations. To make it short I was taken aback by how great the cable sounded and asked for the final version when it would become available. Here it is.

The Noble Audio Night Sky are hand made on order. There is a chrome-looking shield isolation shining through a black braid - small silver dots look like stars on the night sky, hence the cable´s name. My version got bananas, spades are possible. Bananas were transport-protected by PE tubes which is a small finishing touch that I saw earlier only with InAkustik cables. The cable´s workmanship is neat and clean, and the cable is - despite it uses solid core leads and resistant to abuse - very flexible. The maximum length for a set is 2x3m, which is dictated by its production method.

The track My Wall (Cryo, Mixed Emotions) is a wonderful example of smart EBM and it is a piece of music which - on the good equipment with good cables - will crush you with dancefloor intensity. With my reference speaker cables I hear punchy synthetic bass line, transparent imaging, precise rhythmics and full enveloping sound. The Nights Sky are rich and saturated in lows and although the bass lacks ultimate definition it makes a perfect counterweight to sparkling top end. Droning soundtracks like Blade Runner 2049 are simply superdroning through the Night Sky, without weight this music lacks most of its charm. With the Noble Audio speaker cable it was deeply penetrating.

CD Vilde Frang Korngold/Britten Violin Concertos (Frankfurt Radio Symphony, James Gaffigan, Warner Classic) is one of my favourite rcordings this spring. It is so wonderfully recorded with its stunning transparency, colourful tonality, clear dynamics and endless ambience, not mentioning Ms. Frang's virtuosity. With the Night Sky the disc was not robbed of anything and I could savour it in full like with any other superb cable. The violin was sweet and detailed, strings resonances and the body of the instrument perfectly delineated, dynamic swings heard in their full subtlety. I cannot say a single bad word about how the Night Sky performed.

The cable has a very low noise threshold (if there is anything like this) and even the tinniest nuances are depicted against a contrasting background. I find this feature very important as it guarantees minimum to no compression and helps music sound alive. Tonally the Night Sky slightly rises around 800Hz which lends more woodiness to strings and winds like cello or oboe, on the other hand it also gives a slight tint of nasality to human voices. Depending on your equipment it may or may not be perceptible.

The Night Sky use 8 solid core monocrystal UP - OCC 99,99998% wires. The total cross-section area is 2x3,2mm2. Wires are encapsulated in Teflon and spaced with the help of cotton. The Night Sky is shielded by silver plated OFC braid.

No matter which spatial direction I take the Noble Audio's are imaging without any issue; the soundstage is three-dimensional with no preference for either width or depth, there is no tendency to homogenize the sonic picture neither there are any spatial imbalances that would make the cable depart from natural portrayal of music. During my first encounter with the Night Sky I was asked a question - how much would you pay? I quickly scanned all the cables that passed through my ears and place the Night Sky into the appropriate tier. After months, when I learnt its price, I was taken aback again. Its asking price is friendlier than a koala bear. It is a highly recommended and favourably positioned speaker cable.
