Floorstanding loudspeakers
The DF-5s are not a love at first listen. This proved to be their greatest asset after all. On the other hand they are quite demanding for in-room placement and if I should be honest I am not entirely sure that during the short auditioning I found the best place for them. Therefore I see the provided tools for individual voicing as a clever solution.
Funkce a forma
The Definition DF-5 are 3-way speakers in a true Dynavoice fashion: 1.8cm thick cabinets from MDF have the sandwich baffle that is even thicker with 3.0cm, which is quite exceptional in such a low price category. No need to say that the cabinets are rigidly braced. The DF-5s house two 13cm woofers with Kevlar-reinforced cones with aluminum baskets, further supported by reflex ports – one fires back in the upper part of the cabinet, the other is front-firing in the lower part of the cabinet. High frequencies are handled by a tandem of tweeters that are embedded in a separate plate: a soft dome tweeter and a ribbon tweeter. The DF-5s are bi-wirable via gold plated posts. The packaging includes also foam plugs to regulate the speakers´ bass output. And these may come in handy as the DF-5s sound really big.
Nízké frekvence
The bigger volume of the DF-5’s cabinets made me expect deeper bass comparing to the Dynavoice DM-6 stand-mounters that I reviewed last year. Well, the DF-5s dig really deeper and they excite bigger mass of air – to the extent that there may be too much bass in the room. The specifications say 27Hz of low-end extension and 92dB sensitivity which is really astounding but not always welcome, especially in acoustically untreated rooms. They know it in Dynavoice and that’s why the DF-5s are equipped with the foam plugs and possibility to change their tonal balance by repositioning a bracket located at the terminal posts plate. This way the midrange can be lifted/suppressed by -2dB, +2dB a +4dB which results into a change of perceived loudness of each audioband and thus ‘voicing’ the speakers to your liking.
Čistota rozlišení
The tandem of the fabric dome and the ribbon really excels with highly resolved, clear and natural highs. In fact the top end is so good that judged by it I would say the DF-5s are real high-end speakers. However, the highs are so well integrated that they don’t draw your attention. Casual listening at a dealer will not tell you how good these speakers are and you’ll probably end up buying some self-indulgent overly bright speakers instead – which you will regret later. There is always the thin line between “attractiveness” and “correctness”.
Tonální věrnost
The dynamics of the Dynavoice Definition DF-5 is solid, less adrenaline and more real thing. They can play really loud without the sound collapsing due to cabinet resonances – the cabinets and stiff enough. Depending on what you listen to and how big is your room and your placement within it you may prefer to change the voicing (with aforementioned brackets) individually for different listening styles (music, movies).
Prostorovost
The imaging of the Definition DF-5 is good and does not exceed what is expected at their asking price. Recently I have reviewed STX Electrino 250 speakers in this price category and they threw more impressive soundstage, though they were not able to keep it stable with increasing volume levels. Give the Dynavoice Definition DF-5 a listen and take time to evaluate what you hear.
