WHARFEDALE EVO 4.2
Stand mount monitors
Wow, what am I hearing here? I rubbed my eyes with disbelief. Are these small stand-mounts, for less than an average monthly salary, a real thing? At various occasions I mentioned already that some gems of the hi-fi world are well hidden in the tailings of commercial offerings and await discovery. The EVO 4.2 loudspeakers are such gems.
Funkce a forma
It is clear that launching 800€ speakers and let them play like 4000€ speakers would deny any markup logic, although consumers would be rejoicing, for sure. In Wharfedale they had to consider the recommended selling price and accommodate their choice of parts and materials to fit in. No matter how tight the budget was they managed to build a real champion.
The more I listened to the EVO 4.2 the more I liked them. They had that easy-on-ear type of presentation in which my worries and troubles just drifted away and let me concentrate purely on the music. The EVO 4.2s were airy, expansive, clean, honest, they could throw a big soundstage and were hi-fi enough for any visitor not to guess their real price. I could continue forever about how much I liked these speakers and before I will, let me tell you something about their design.
Nízké frekvence
The Wharfedale EVO 4.2 are 3-way monitors with quite an usual line-up of drivers. Treble are handled by an AMT driver (Air Motion Transformer) with a pleated membrane. Unlike flat ribbon drivers the diaphragm in the AMT pushes back and forward in a physical motion similar to an accordion, thus pumping the air. Like ribbon tweeters the AMT drivers are fast and have more uniform response and less distortion than conventional cone or dome tweeters; the trade-off may be hidden in directionality as AMT drivers usually have limited horizontal dispersion – careful toe-in will be required. The AMT in the EVO 4.2 was scaled down from Wharfedale’s Elysian flagship speakers.
The midrange is far from conventional too - to match the sonic advantages of the AMT tweeter Wharfedale developed a fast and responsive dome midrange driver with soft fabric dome, damped with a plasticizer coating, and vented aperiodically into a specially shaped rear chamber to absorb rear energy from the dome. Wharfedale claims that the midrange dome delivers a linear response from 800Hz to 5kHz.
Now, the bass unit – inspired by the Elysian once again – is the only conventional cone transducer found in the EVO 4.2. and features Kevlar cone with a low mass rubber surround. The bass output is supported by a slot port, which actually means that there is a standard bass reflex pipe firing to the bottom of the cabinet to which another ´bottom´ is attached at defined distance, thus creating a slot for the bass to be dispersed.
For stand-mounted speakers the Wharfedale EVO 4.2 are quite heavy (13kg each) which signals thick enclosure walls and good non-resonant behaviour. Grilles can be attached on invisible magnets; the rear binding posts are of an audiophile grade and support bi-wiring. The sensitivity and impedance are usual 87db and 8 ohms. Summed up, the EVO 4.2 offers a lot for their modest asking price.
Čistota rozlišení
I mentioned that the tweeter was clean and airy, almost ´planar´ in its expression. It never pushed my ears into discomfort and although the highs were very decent, they had a lot of light in them. I wished they were more sophisticated to bring out more detail in the Ian Matthews a cappella remake of 60´s The Crystals hit Da Doo Ron Ron, where the sound was maybe too smooth on the top and some events – like inhale/exhale action of the voices – were not so outlined as I used to hear with high end speakers. But wait, I was listening to entry level monitors, wasn´t I? On the contrary, the non-conflicting highs resulted into a relaxed listening session, and the recordings that were not that pretty – like Anthrax´s Among The Living album (Islands Masters) that can be thin and shrilly at places – were digestible and enjoyable through the EVO 4.2.
Tonální věrnost
There was no such a thing like ´deep bass´ in the EVO 4.2´s sound, quite understandably for the cabinets are limited in size. Yet the higher overtones and transient attacks that define the bass tones were present and thus plucked double-bass strings and the mallet hitting the kick-drum were portrayed convincingly. With the help of the room the Wharfedale EVO 4.2 can reach down to 40Hz region, deep enough for most amplified instruments. Coming back to Anthrax, the song Skeleton In The Closet had a nice and punchy bass line, pleasantly separated from the guitar staccatos. Should you want to add some weight and volume to the bass, one or two subwoofers will do the job. I can imagine that if the subwoofer is carefully matched, the Wharfedale/sub combo may be unbeatable.
Prostorovost
The rather small size of cabinets hinders playing too loud in big rooms; this is not a complaint, it is a statement that is common to all but the best stand-mounted speakers. I do not suspect, however, that any owner of the EVO 4.2 will place them in a hundred square meter room. In standard rooms the Wharfedales will be able to pressurize the space without stressing themselves – I could achieve that with Doug MacLeod and Raylene from Exactly Like This album (Reference Recordings) when the playback level was loud enough to excite my neighbours and drive my cat out of the house.
All what I wrote already should lead to the following conclusion: No, the Wharfedale Evo 4.2s are not the perfect speakers, however, in their price range, they are one of the finest monitors available. Add approximately 250€ for matching stands and still you will have great performing speakers that outclass what´s usual at the price. I warmly recommend the EVO 4.2 – go and get them before they realize in Wharfedale how good they are and increase the price.
